Birthday Greetings from LaConner

I began my day at 2:33 am, when Holly Golightly, my dog, woke me from a beautiful dream.  I was surprised that the scene of me winning a considerable lottery didn’t happen.  But my disappointment didn’t last long – because Holly’s tail was wagging like she hadn’t seen me in three weeks.  I can’t imagine how I would live without her love.

I followed Holly outside and searched for the moon and stars, but it appeared to be completely overcast.  Within a few minutes, we were back inside, and I was making a coffee.  I usually get up between 3:30 and 4:30 am each morning, to write while my mind is quiet and peaceful.  It’s difficult to concentrate when you have the pressures of the day cluttering your imagination, but this morning was different.  I was excited about my plan to drive to LaConner, Washington today, and it was all that my mind wanted to think about.

If you’re a regular reader of my stuff, you probably already know how much I love the sights and sounds of Washington State – especially in Bellingham, LaConner, Anacortes and the San Juan Islands.  But the last time that I was in LaConner was during the tulip festival in late April.  It’s about a ninety-minute drive to LaConner from my place in Langley.

Today, I planned to visit a particular antique store on the main street and purchase a birthday gift for two of my close friends: Robert, whose birthday is today and Dorean, whose birthday is on July 3rd.  The store has a vast library of old LIFE magazines for sale.  Two years ago, I bought a LIFE magazine published on January 9th, 1950, which is a day after I was born.

So today I’m going to look for a LIFE magazine for Robert, that’s dated June 29, 1947, and one for Dorean, that’s dated July 3, 1942.  By the way, Dorean is Norm’s wife.

I’m also planning to walk around the downtown area to see what other treasures I can find.

It didn’t take long before I was inside a unique store that sold items created by local artists.   The name of the store is ‘That’s Knot All.’  I purchased a couple of handmade greeting cards to use as birthday cards for Robert and Dorean and then as I was making my way to the cashier, I noticed an artist’s rendering of a dog – who looked identical to my Holly Golightly!

My heart started to race with excitement, and soon I was showing the picture to another shopper, who was ahead of me in line.  I’m not one you’d ever confuse of being an avid shopper, but today I was thrilled with my find.  I’ll show it to Holly when I get home, but she’ll roll her eyes and wait patiently, with tail wagging, until I ‘fetch’ her a dog biscuit.  Anyways, here is the picture – doesn’t it look like Holly?  Especially the eyes.

I continued walking along the main street and stopped in several other exciting stores.   A sign should state, “LaConner has everything you need.  If they don’t have it, you don’t need it!”  I finished my walk and loaded my goodies into my vehicle and headed back to Canada.

Tomorrow, I’m going to my favorite place to walk, and then on Canada Day (holiday) Monday, I’m hoping to get more thrills by attending the Prism concert and then fireworks, at the pier in White Rock.  If you’re not doing anything, give me a call, and we can meet at the Oceanside Hotel coffee shop on Marine Drive.

Happy Birthday, Robert!  Happy Birthday, Dorean!

And Happy Birthday, Canada!

Dedicated to Holly Golightly

Hugs,

Danny

Today’s tune from Danny’s library (purchased):

Birthday – lyrics

You say it’s your birthday
It’s my birthday too, yeah
They say it’s your birthday
We’re gonna have a good time
I’m glad it’s your birthday
Happy birthday to you

Yes we’re going to a party party
Yes we’re going to a party party
Yes we’re going to a party party

I would like you to dance, birthday
Take a cha-cha-cha-chance, birthday
I would like you to dance, birthday
Dance

I would like you to dance, birthday
Take a cha-cha-cha-chance, birthday
I would like you to dance, birthday
Dance

You say it’s your birthday
Well it’s my birthday too, yeah
You say it’s your birthday
We’re gonna have a good time
I’m glad it’s your birthday
Happy birthday to you

  2. I wish I could have met you yesterday (my only day off for the long weekend) for that concert. Alas, your just a little too far away. I spent the day at Waterfront Park and later watched fireworks from the top of Lonsdale. It was a lovely Canada Day. I hope you enjoyed the festivities too. Another great article and I love the picture it looks just like Holly. 🙂
